Once upon a time (and really not so long ago) I was a radio DJ, a position I very much enjoyed. And though I borrowed my fair share of records from the station's collection, I had amassed a rather large library through the generosity of my many anonymous friends on the world wide web. I excused these indiscretions on the grounds that it would all be useful for the DJ gig.
It was, to an extent. Soon I realized that I wasn't listening as much as I was observing. The job was playing records for other people. It was fun, but when it was over my iTunes library clocked in at 10,850 songs. I know of collections far larger but that's almost a full month of uninterrupted music, and still I listen to the same dozen albums over and over.
I've started this blog to give myself a reason to play all of these songs, one by one, and to keep my writing mechanism sharp. There is no other goal. It will be highly derivative of this and this, and also this guy. I mean for it to be - I'm still an observer, I'm still a collector, and I'm still a DJ. But now I'm actually a listener too.
